Pierre Morin

PRODUCER: Domaine Pierre Morin
REGION: Sancerre, Loire Valley, France
WINEMAKERS: Pierre Morin

Working from the conviction that great wine begins in the vineyard, Pierre Morin has shaped his style around rigorous viticulture and low yields - typically around 40hl/ha - as well as meticulous selection and strictly manual harvest. The proof is in the textured, terroir-driven Sancerre he produces.

WINERY HISTORY

The Morin family has farmed around Bué - one of Sancerre’s most distinguished villages - for generations. It was Pierre’s father, Gérard, who redirected the family’s future toward viticulture in 1976, gradually expanding the estate from 1.5 hectares to 10 hectares within the Sancerre appellation.

Pierre joined the domaine in 2004, bringing with him experience from leading estates such as Domaine Dujac in Burgundy. Under his stewardship, the focus sharpened toward sustainable farming, reduced yields and site-specific expression. Today the domaine continues to evolve with Pierre’s son Louis, who joined his father after completing his oenology studies in Beaune and apprenticeships at Domaine Trapet in Gevrey-Chambertin and Domaine Drouhin in Oregon, among others.

VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING

All wines are now certified biodynamic and each parcel is vinified separately to preserve its individual character. The entry white cuvée, Prémices, is fermented and raised entirely in stainless steel, with extended lees ageing lending texture and breadth.

Pierre’s reputation, however, rests on his single-vineyard bottlings from some of Sancerre’s most revered sites. Chêne Marchand, Bué’s most celebrated vineyard, sits on gravelly limestone soils and is cropped at extremely low yields, producing Sauvignon Blanc of remarkable depth, structure and mineral drive. Ovide, sourced from vines planted in the 1950s near the winery, includes a small proportion aged in used French oak demi-muids. Production rarely exceeds 200 cases. His flagship, Chant de l’Orme, is made in minute quantities (approximately 800 bottles), with half the wine matured in used demi-muids. It is a profound and structured Sancerre, combining aromatic intensity with impressive ageing potential.

Beyond Sauvignon Blanc, the estate also produces Pinot Noir from clay-rich sites. Fermented and aged for 18 months in used oak and stainless-steel vats, the entry Sancerre Rouge is vibrant and supple, showing great varietal character. From the Bellechaume vineyard, Pierre crafts a more ambitious cuvée entirely aged for 18 months years in used barrels - a wine of finesse and depth that would not look out of place alongside fine red Burgundy.
