U.S.A. > California > Napa Valley
Made from mountain grown grapes, honouring the international tradition of Riesling which thrives on steep hillsides. Smith-Madrone's goal is to make distinctive artisanal wines that are an expression of both the vintage and vintner, but above all else, bring pleasure to the senses. This is one of our favourite expressions of New-World Riesling. Opens with Meyer lemons, pomelo, orange flowers, and just a dab of Mandarin orange hiding shyly behind a rose bush. Solid dose of minerality. Racy and beautifully balanced with a backbone of juicy fruit acidity.
91/100 - Classic Riesling aromatics of petrol, tropical fruit and petrichor. Stu Smith is one of the founding fathers of the variety in California's Napa Valley, choosing east-facing slopes for his Riesling vines. The wine offers ample ripeness, with tropical fruits, zesty lime, fleshy ripe peach, and some phenolic notes on the palate. - Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
92+/100 - Scents of petrol, pineapple and lime mark the nose of the 2018 Riesling, which continues a long heritage of Smith-Madrone Rieslings. It's medium-bodied, just off-dry and intense, with ample concentration and a long, crisp finish. In a Napa Valley that has become increasingly focused on Cabernet Sauvignon (and the occasional Chardonnay), it's refreshing to find that these sorts of individual, characterful wines still exist. - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
93/100 - This traditional, German-style Riesling is scented with petrol and pine, leading to crisp flavors of tart peaches and apricots on a slightly grippy texture. It makes a wonderful alternative to the usual Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. - Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast
92/100 - This is bright and full of energy with notes of tangerines, sliced pears and spices. Attractive minerality to it with a medium body and round, creamy texture. Bright acidity and a flavorful finish. Drink now. - James Suckling

This Riesling opens with vibrant aromas of Meyer lemons, pomelo, orange blossoms, and a hint of mandarin, all set against a backdrop of minerality. On the palate, it's lively and impeccably balanced, with a juicy acidity that's both tantalizing and built to last. It's a wine that invites immediate enjoyment but promises to reward those who wait for up to twenty years.

Produced from grapes grown on challenging steep slopes, this Riesling pays tribute to the tradition of mountain viticulture. Smith-Madrone focus on crafting distinctive, artisanal wines that not only showcase the uniqueness of each vintage but also aim to delight the senses. Despite the consistent vineyard practices year after year, nature endows each vintage with its own set of flavors and characteristics, celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of every year. This commitment to vintage variation captures the essence of the time and place, offering a unique experience with each bottle.

Smith-Madrone

A visit to Stuart and Charles Smith’s winery, high up on Spring Mountain, is like a journey back to the halcyon days of 1970s Napa Valley. This is not the land of technological wine making, fancy tasting rooms and slick marketing – this is a down-home, honest and authentic wine estate that has remained largely unchanged since it was established...
