Italy > Piedmont > Barbaresco

With Piedmontese Nebbiolo continuing to climb in price year after year, it is becoming increasingly hard to find true value wines in the northwest corner of Italy. Even Barbaresco, long considered the budget friendly alternative to Barolo, has seen large price increases in recent years. However, some winemakers in this region continue to produce exceptional value reds without compromising on quality, foremost among La Ca Nova. This is a a driving, mineral-laden Barbaresco sure to be a favourite amongst lovers of Nebbiolo. A classic, if slightly richer, take on Barbaresco, there is a vibrant tension in this wine that encourages further consideration.

93/100 - La Ca' Nova's 2019 Barbaresco is stellar. Deep, layered and expansive on the palate, the 2019 is so impressive. Sweet red cherry, plum, blood orange mint and spice give this charming, effusive Barbaresco tons of complexity. The 2019 is a serious, serious wine with a lot going on. Don't overlook it. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

This Barbaresco from the Rocca family is more about elegance than power, with Nebbiolo’s delicate floral and red fruit characteristics coming to the fore.

This wine demonstrates that traditional Nebbiolo is still being produced by the region’s small family producers and that the historic production methods of long maceration, indigenous yeast, and old oak ‘botti’ are still alive and thriving.

Ca Nova’ Barbaresco’s possess an earthy undertone which gives them great character and a sense of their origins and terroir. A beautiful wine for ‘Tradizionalisti’ and Nebbiolo fanatics!

Pair with sirloin, veal scallopini, aged cheeses, or any red meat dish your heart desires.

Up on a ridge above the town of Barbaresco in Piemonte, three brothers Pietro, Giulio and Franco Rocca preside over 12 hectares of ancient vineyards.

They produce some of the best and most authentic Barbaresco available, as well as producing Dolcetto and Barbera, among other local varieties. The vines are cultivated with the upmost respect for tradition, with careful selection of the grapes that go into the wine, and no chemical treatment on the vineyard. Although their cellar has been modernised to take advantage of the latest winemaking technology, it is still housed deep underground so as to take advantage of the natural cool and stable environment.
