Sandhi rank amongst the most highly regarded and influential wineries in California, founded and run by the pioneering duo of Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr. Renowned for their work in shaping the 'New Wine' movement in California during the early-mid 2000s, they have achieved widespread acclaim for their work in Santa Barbara's windswept Sta. Rita Hills region. We recently secured a few lines of back vintage stock from them, including this stunning magnum of 2014 Rita's Crown Chardonnay. Sourced from the highest vineyard in the entire appellation, the unencumbered southern exposure of this site allows it to develop greater ripeness than other Sta. Rita Hills vineyards. Showing more fruit concentration and opulence than many Sandhi bottlings, it retains the hallmark, thrilling length and acidity of the winery.
17+/20 - Floral and citrus aromatics carry into a savoury, lively, saline and citrus palate that leaves even the tactile effect of saline on the palate through the long finish. Flinty accents also persist throughout. While the aromatics are pretty and lifted, they transform into a palate of power. There is initially less complexity here than the other Sta Rita Hills wines but more power of presence. This wine is the most palate-filling as well. It wants a bit of time in bottle to integrate and gain finesse, which it certainly has, but it is showing as restrained exuberance currently instead. On the palate, concentrated fruit flavours of pear, green apple, apricot, and lemon curd. Lean yet paradoxically opulent, the intense minerality of this wine recalls top-quality Chablis. A hint of tertiary development adds to the intrigue, though the wine retains its crisp and refreshing quality.
