Sandhi rank amongst the most highly regarded and influential wineries in California, founded and run by the pioneering duo of Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr. Renowned for their work in shaping the 'New Wine' movement in California during the early-mid 2000s, they have achieved widespread acclaim for their work in Santa Barbara's windswept Sta. Rita Hills region. We recently secured a few lines of back vintage stock from them, including this stunning magnum of 2014 Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay. The original site of Burgundy varieties on California's Central Coast, the wines from this vineyard are marked by their effortlessly fresh and mineral character. The 2014 is currently in its prime drinking window, with its evolution prolonged by the greater volume of the magnum bottle. Still fresh yet with more concentrated fruit flavours, this is a wonderful Chardonnay for pairing with any manner of light cuisine.
17.5/20 - The notes in both the aromatics and palate carry a deeper tone, hitting at a lower register, compared with the Mt Carmel and Bentrock. There is also a broader presence across the palate. Mixed citrus notes marry to savoury flavours and the salty-savoury flavour of aged meats carry through a long finish. There is a bit more phenolic cut to this wine – especially compared to the Mt Carmel, which is almost lacy in comparison, while the Bentrock is more taut and compact currently – and a feeling of more concentration as well, which makes sense considering the age of the vines. On the palate, more fleshy and fruity than the nose, leaning into flavours of apricot and green orchard fruit with bright, saline nuances and a gentle touch of well-integrated oak that's more texture than taste.
