Piedrasassi is the Syrah-focused project of acclaimed Santa Barbara winemaker Sashi Moorman. Offering a fascinating mix between the fruit-forward intensity of California and classical, European-style structure, these Syrahs are true wines of place. Their Sta. Rita Hills bottling is sourced from two opposing yet complementary vineyards, Patterson and John Sebastiano. Sitting across from each other on the eastern edge of the appellation, the fruit from this sites yields a surprisingly opulent Syrah, especially given the vineyards' close proximity to the ocean. The most forward of the Piedrasassi bottlings, expect notes of dark berry fruit alongside smokey nuances.
95/100 - Brilliant ruby colouring with a violet rim and pronounced intensity on the nose. Silky and smooth, with notes of wild blueberry concentrate, dried potpourri, black plum skin, and violet flower bouquet. The dark and heady flavours of the fruits above are layered with slightly bitter notes of toasted cocoa, medley with medium tannins and black pepper. On the palate, vibrant if a bit stern in its youth, expect flavours of plum, cacao nib, dark red fruits, briny olive, bacon fat, and incense. Tannins are gritty-yet-integrated, while an excellent acidity leads the way to a savoury, fruit-tinged finish.
