U.S.A. > California > Santa Cruz

With vines much older than those in Napa Valley, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA has long offered some of California's greatest wines. The vineyard, which winemaker Jamie Kutch has been working for many years, is situated just a mere 3.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. A combination of the sandy loam soils, sunshine, and the cold climate of this site has created a Chardonnay full of cool climate character, yet simultaneously uniquely Californian.

17.5/20 - Wonderfully bright, energetic but fully ripe fruit that informs a wine that's already a pleasure to drink. Complete. Great fruit/acid integration and a slightly saline note on that lime framework. My kinda Chardonnay ... Quite long. I'd love to taste a fully mature version of this wine. - Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com

On the nose, invitingly aromatic with notes of exotic fruits, pear, lemon, mandarin, and roasted chesnuts.

On the palate, vivid and lively with well-concentrated flavours of lemon and orange. Touches of hazelnuts are present, as are some sweet baked lemon notes.

Lovely in its youth, this is a white capable of ageing for at least five years.

Wonderful as an apéritif, consider pairing this Chardonnay with tuna tartar and mustard or delicate white fish.

Kutch

When Jamie Kutch traded the high-octane world of Wall Street for the rolling vineyards of California in 2005, many raised an eyebrow. But skepticism turned to acclaim when his debut Pinot Noir notched an impressive 93 points in Wine Spectator. Jamie honed his skills alongside industry giants: he worked at Sonoma’s esteemed Kosta Browne and gained invaluable insights from Aubert... Read More >>
