Spioenkop is a winery in the heart of South Africa's Cape Winelands run by Belgian-born winemaker and former engineer Koen Roose. Named for a Dutch nurse during the Anglo-Boer War, this is a single block Chenin from the lower, shale-based sections of the vineyard, offering a rounder, more powerful style of Chenin with distinct notes of tropical fruit and a lovely acidity. Aged for 11 months in old oak barrels, the wine gains layers of complexity, contributing to leesy, textured notes of biscuit and lemon pith which give it a rich mouthfeel without sacrificing freshness.

On the nose, aromas of peaches, quince, pear, guava, and oak spice.

On the palate, rich yet fresh with an attractive acidity and flavours of biscuit, lemon pith, yellow fruits, and white peach.

Drink now - 2032.

Enjoy as an apéritif, or consider pairing alongside caramelised onion and goat cheese tart or pork tenderloin with roasted root vegetables.
