Le Piane’s Boca has become recognised not only as one of great wines of the Alto Piemonte, but as one of the great Nebbiolo based wines of Italy. In doing so, it has become a beacon of quality in Boca, lifting the region from obsolescence and establishing it as a pre-eminent region for growing Nebbiolo.
95+/100 - The 2016 Boca is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel, but it needs time. The only question is how much. Effusive aromatics soar out of the glass, suggesting a feeling of openness that is not quite there on the palate, where the wine is decidedly austere. The 2016 is a classic Boca laced with expressive small red berry fruits, blood orange, mint and rose petal. It will be magnificent once the tannins relent a bit. On the nose, a rich bouquet of red fruits alongside mineral touches typical of the soil from which it originates.
On the palate, seductive flavours of blackberry and currant abound before a sweet and fleeting hint of liquorice on the finish.
Try pairing with pasta with meat sauces, mature cheeses, or gamey meats such as herb crusted rabbit.
