While Felton Road may be best recognised for producing some of the Antipodes' greatest Pinot Noirs, we think their Chardonnay more than matches up to its more famous red siblings. Grown around the small town of Bannockburn in Central Otago - New Zealand's vinous sweet spot - the grapes were farmed organically and biodynamically, before undergoing natural fermentation in well-seasoned French oak (only 5% new). Block 6 was planted to Mendoza and Dijon Clone in 1993, with its high elevation and north-facing slopes yielding an pure Chardonnay dominated by notes of nectarine and ripe stone fruit.
96/100 - Complex aromas of Meyer lemons, lime curd, orange blossoms, phosphorus and yellow apples on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated acidity and a creamy texture, carrying notes of stone fruit supported by hints of puff pastry and mandarin pith. Generous with an underlying tension. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap. - James Suckling
94/100 - Felton Road’s Block 6 and Block 2 Chardonnays always provide a lot of pleasure, but the slightly riper, denser Block 6 gets the edge this vintage. Plenty of Meyer lemon, orange zest and white peach, plus wet stone and white flowers. It’s light on its feet with a flowing creaminess, fine texture, good fruit weight and plenty of length. B-Corp & IWCA certified. - Emma Jenkins MW, Decanter
93/100 - Tasted alongside the Block 2, this 2023 Block 6 Chardonnay feels far more cohesive and resolved. Still tropical, and with viscose-like weight in the mouth, the wine evokes words like "exotic," "opulent" and "sophisticated." The wine is nutty and salty and full of flavor, the acidity tucked into the layers of fruit in the mouth. Very good. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate
17.5/20 - A little more obviously oaky than the Block 2 but not overdone. Salty, very dry, much more place than variety. Mouth-watering citrus but not a fruity wine. Very long, highly strung. - Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com
On the palate, peach and nectarine flavours dominate the broad and expansive palate, but are sufficiently contained by a finish of purity and dancing acidity. The depth and length are impressive. Uncomplicated by unnecessary intervention, it’s an accurate and compelling expression of Block 6, Elms Vineyard.
