While Felton Road may be best recognised for producing some of the Antipodes' greatest Pinot Noirs, we think their Chardonnay more than matches up to its more famous red siblings. Grown around the small town of Bannockburn in Central Otago - New Zealand's vinous sweet spot - the grapes were farmed organically and biodynamically, before undergoing natural fermentation in well-seasoned French oak (only 5% new). Block 2 was planted to Mendoza Clone in 1993, and yields an elegant and refined style of Chardonnay that bursts with notes of lemony citrus and white flowers.
17.5/20 - Smells a little richer than the Bannockburn but still restrained and elegant. Creamy, caressing texture suggesting old or big barrels. 96/100 - Mineral-driven aromas of flint, green apples, lemon peel, crushed river stones and lime blossoms. The palate is light-to medium-bodied with a laserlike acidity and underlying power, giving notes of pears, orange peel and tangerines.
