Les Rochins is the top wine of Domaine Garon, sourced from an excellent site on the Côte Brune very close to the renowned La Turque vineyard. Intense with marked notes of dark fruit and violets - as well as a distinct minerality - this wine is intended for long ageing.
93/100 - Bright violet. Smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of dark berries, cherry pie and vanilla, along with a hint of olive in the background. Supple, broad and sweet on the palate, offering concentrated black raspberry, spicecake and violet pastille flavors and a snap of smoky minerality on the back half. Shows impressive energy and detail and reveals no rough edges. Finishes velvety and quite long, displaying excellent focus, even tannins and lingering spiciness. - Josh Raynolds, Vinous
96/100 - Very fine, fresh and highly spiced on the nose. The palate has a lovely sense of tension and energy, it’s well balanced. Tannins are fine, quite slight, so the fruit and aromatics are really to the fore. With its Burgundian finesse, this is lovely. Not a hugely structured year, so I would drink reasonably young, and with great pleasure. 18 months in barriques, of which 30% were new. - Matt Walls, Decanter
Since joining, Kevin and Fabien have refurbished the vineyards and rebuilt the cellar while making changes to the winemaking. These modifications include destemming the majority of the grapes and cutting the time in cask from 24 months to 18 while reducing the amount of oak that is new. As a result the fruit expresses itself more clearly and the structure is a touch more supple, without sacrificing the concentration and balance that will allow them to age gracefully.
The vineyards, all Syrah, cover 5ha of granite and white and brown schist. Each different terroir leaves its indelible influence on the Côte-Rôtie wines produced.
