This is a 100% Montepulciano rosé from Azienda Agricola Valentini, one of the foremost producers in Abruzzo. An intense and bright pink reminiscent of a cherry blossom, this incredible rosé is lively with aromas of raspberry and red currant, as well as an alluring minerality that rounds out this elegant bottling.
93/100 - The 2022 Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is entirely unexpected, tempting the imagination with a cascade of wild strawberries, dried citrus and roses, incense and crushed stone. It opens with a pleasant inner sweetness balanced by zesty acidity as crisp apple and autumnal spice collide with salty minerals and an almondy richness. The 2022 tapers off impossibly fresh yet still staining and long, leaving a flourish of raspberry and licorice that lingers on and on. This is next level Cerasuolo from a master. It is supremely elegant with some remnants of fruit characteristics, but it's the depth and intrigue of this wine that makes one return to the glass time and time again to get lost in its complexities. There is a certain amount of enjoyment in the knowledge that few people will ever get to drink it because of its scarcity.
Valentini is no doubt one of the greatest wine producers in Italy. Edouardo Valentini was known for his extreme selection of grapes, with barely 5% of what he made being released in the bottle, selling off most of his production in bulk. Edouardo died in 2006, but his son Francesco has continued his legacy. Whilst much of Italy was planting international varieties and chasing scores from the American press, Valentini continued to make wine in the Italian way, holding fast to his local varieties and winemaking traditions: the Quintarelli of the South, if you could imagine.
