South Africa > Western Cape

Rocking Horse is the signature white cuvée of South African 'New Wave' wine pioneers John and Tasha Thorne-Seccombe. A blend of Roussanne, Sémillon, Roussanne, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Clairette, the fruit was sourced from several decades-old parcels around the Western Cape. Well-structured and multi-layered, the result of 10 months spent ageing on lees, this white sings of yellow plum, kumquat, and bay leaf with alluring saline undertones.

96/100 - Cool, fresh fynbos flowers, saffron, lemon verbena and kumquat aromatics signal the inherent complexity of this seven vineyard blend from five regions. The heart is old vine Franschhoek Sémillon with Chenin and Clairette Blanche, the 'heritage backbone, while the Roussanne and Chardonnay modernise it,' says producer John Seccombe. Just lightly-brushed with a hint of oak, firming up the structure while a mouth-coating acidity refreshes. - Malu Lambert, Decanter

90+/100 - The 2022 Rocking Horse Cape White, a blend of Sémillon, Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Clairette Blanche, with 13.2% alcohol, showcases a fresh and mineral profile that is slightly shy. The wine kicks with citrus and offers mineral tension before gliding to a cerebral and shy finish. This aged in old, neutral barrels for 10 months with minimal intervention and malolactic fermentation. This vintage produced 18,000 bottles. Enjoy with food. - Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate

90/100 - The 2022 White Blend Rocking Horse Cape is mainly Roussanne and Semillon (this blend changes every year) sourced from seven vineyards. This misses a little definition on the nose, cohering with aeration, bringing crushed stone, linden and wet wool scents. This bides its time. The palate is fresh on the entry with lemon rind and orange pith, fresh and energetic, quite linear and saline, though just a little shorter on the finish at the moment. Very fine. - Neal Martin, Vinous

35% Sémillon
28% Roussanne
14% Chenin Blanc
13% Chardonnay
10% Clairette

On the nose, complex and layered with aromas of kiwi fruit, ginger, apple skin, and white flowers.

On the palate, tight and rounded with a honeyed texture and a long, saline-like finish.
