Kutch Sonoma Coast Bohan Graveyard Block Pinot Noir 2022

Wall Street stockbroker-turned-winemaker Jamie Kutch has become one of the most acclaimed names in California Pinot Noir over the past two decades. Dedicated to the production of site specific Pinot and Chardonnay in the rustic, cool-climate vineyards of California's Sonoma Coast, his wines convey the ethereal charm of these wind-swept, coastal sites found mere miles from the Pacific Ocean. The Graveyard Block Pinot is one of his most beguiling wines, sourced from a tiny 0.5ha plot of own-rooted, dry-farmed Pinot Noir planted at 500m of elevation, 6km from the ocean. Named for the presence of a tombstone dating back to 1875 in the vineyard, this is a powerful yet refreshing iteration of Pinot Noir, singing of bright dark fruit with touches of spice and minerality. 

96/100 - This is from four barrels made from a one acre block in the Bohan vineyard marked by a tombstone from 1875. It was planted in 1988 on its own roots, and is dry grown on rocky soils. 100% destemmed, matured in used French oak. This is an edgy, powerful but fresh expression of Pinot Noir, showing black cherries and even a touch of blackcurrant with lovely tannic structure. There are notes of iodine and spice, and chalk and gravel, all sitting under dense but focused black fruits. Grainy and detailed with finishes quite firm. 94/100 - The 2022 Pinot Noir Bohan Vineyard Graveyard Block is a tiny blend of four barrels from a block planted in 1988. It is also the only Kutch Pinot done with fully destemmed fruit. A blast of dark blue/black fruit, gravel, menthol, cloves, licorice and incense races across the palate, announcing a Pinot endowed with notable structure and gravitas.
