This is an electrifying Chardonnay comes from Ernest Vineyards, a family-run operation elevating the Sonoma Coast to new heights. Pale yellow in colour, this wine shows an impressive bouquet of green and citrus fruit alongside alluring notes of florality and a gripping acidity.
95/100 - The 2022 Chardonnay is a younger vine old Wente clone, and older vine clone 4, the California Chardonnay clone. Variability in cluster size and weight gives a nice texture to the Chardonnay. The "black chardonnay" technique helps the wine become ageable early, aged on fine lees, 25% new barriques, 7.5 months. A gorgeous example of Sonoma Coast Chardonnay that leans into lemon curd and leans away from a reductive style honeyed ginger spices the wine's finish just a touch. - Clive Pursehouse, Decanter

The sources of this wine are tougher to farm and lower-yielding than Sonoma Coast sites farther inland. The area is cooler and wetter, so vineyard management is more intensive, requiring a sharper eye toward spotting disease early and more proactive canopy management. Cooler weather during flowering means that yields are tiny. Factor in the young vine Old Wente clone and old vine Clone 4 that make up the core of this wine, and yields are even smaller still.
