Marlène Soria is widely regarded as one of Southern France's greatest vignerons, with the estate-agent-turned-winemaker's Languedoc cuvées belonging to the highest echelon of French wines. While known widely for her reds, it is Oro, her only white bottling, that stands apart as her most unique and idiosyncratic wine. Farmed entirely organically, it is composed of 75% Rolle (Vermentino), with smaller percentages of Viognier, Rousssanne, and indigeinous varieties blended in. While this may sound typical for the south of France, it is the extraordinary ageing regime of Oro that sets it apart from any other wine in the world. Aged in large format vats and barrells for a decade or more, the controlled oxidation that occurs during this process is key to the identiy of Oro. The product of this is a profile unlike anything we've ever tried, with evolved, tertiary aromatics balanced by a paradoxical liveliness of fruit. A stunning white, and truly unlike any other bottle in the world.
On the palate, Oro is rich yet light, with its rich and oily textured balanced by a firm acidity that belies its extended ageing. Flavours of marmalade, apricot, beeswax, honey, roasted nuts, and toasted bread dance across the palate, balanced by a subtle minerality and citrus zest bitterness. The finish is long, savoury, and spice-tinged. A superlative effort.
