Riesling used to be widely planted on Napa Valley's many hillside vineyards, but has largely been ripped up due to the vacillating nature of consumer preferences. However, some steadfast producers - such as the Smith brothers at their winery high up on Spring Mountain - have defied prevailing trends, believing in the potential of Riesling in America's most famous viticultural region. Producing this Riesling in much the same way they have since the early 1980s, they grow it on their steepest vineyards, respecting the time-honoured wisdom that the greatest Rieslings come from such sites. Practically bursting with aromatics of Meyer lemon, pomelo, orange flowers, and rose petals, this continues to rank amongst our favourite Rieslings from anywhere in the world.
94/100 - A stellar Riesling from one of the top producers in Napa for this now rare variety. From a high elevation, dry-farmed vines are high on Spring Mountain. This Riesling offers beautiful aromas of white flowers, dried ginger and just the slightest kiss of petrol alongside a note of nectarine skin. The palate is vibrant with tangy lime pith, juicy Meyer lemon pulp and seaspray salinity throughout—a classic. - Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
93/100 - Riesling is quite unusual in Napa Valley, but the Smith brothers make an outstanding version. Preserved lemons, kerosine and orange sherbet on the nose. The palate is focused and minerally, with notes of orange zest and candied kaffir limes carried by a textured, medium body. Very vibrant and fresh. Drink or hold. - James Suckling
94/100 - Brightening aromatics carry into abundant flavors of salted lemon, lime zest and grapefruit pith. A pleasingly textural palate makes this sophisticated Riesling a perfect accompaniment for a range of foods. It is delicious now and will develop beautifully in the bottle. A firm and enticing wine. - Elaine Chukan Brown, Wine Enthusiast
On the palate, racy and beautifully balanced with a
throughline of juicy fruit acidity supported by a backbone of minerality. Flavours of Meyer lemon, orange, Mandarin, and green apple burst across the palate. The finish is long and waxy, with a hint of white pepper adding a dimension of spice. A superlative Riesling.
Drink now - 2040. Seriously.
Perfect on its own, we think this Riesling is best enjoyed alongside some spiced Thai food.
