France > Beaujolais > Régnié
From Régnié, Beaujolais' newest Cru, Julien Sunier delivers a vibrant, complex wine. Highlighted by notes of blackberries, plums, figs, and a hint of florals, this wine comes from 60-year-old vines rooted in rose granite sands. This bottle is in magnum format.

91/100 - The 2021 Régnié is Sunier's 15th vintage for Julien Sunier from 4 hectares, half on granite and half on alluvial soils. This is 100% carbonic maceration matured 30% in foudres and 70% in used 15-20-year-old barrels. It has a more tertiary aromas with touches of pressed flowers and a touch of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, edgy and slightly chalky towards the finish that coheres beautifully in the glass. - Neal Martin, Vinous

91/100 - I love the intense wild strawberry character of this expressive Regnie that feels a lot more powerful and structured than its 11.8% alcoholic content suggests. Excellent interplay of restrained tannins, mineral acidity and forthright berry fruit. Long clean finish. A cuvee from the En Oeillat, Les Vergers and Basse Ronze sites. Matured half and half in small oak and large casks for nine months. Unfiltered. Drink or hold. - Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

TASTING PROFILE:
A lively blend of ripe plums, juicy blackberries, luscious figs, floral undertones, and velvety tannins, exuding freshness and energy.
IN THE VINEYARD:

Location: Beaujolais, Régnié; honing in on Oeillat, les Vergers, and Basse Ronze.
Altitude: Ranging from 280 to 400 meters, drawing the southern sun's full benefits.
Size: 3.93 hectares.
Vines: An average age of 60 years, deeply rooted and enriched by time.
Soil: Delicate rose granite sands with hints of light clay in the subsoil, each contributing uniquely to the wine's character.

IN THE WINERY:

Vinification: Gravity-fed processes merge with indigenous yeasts, working their magic sans SO2. Carbonic maceration stretches between 10 to 20 days, followed by manual vat emptying and traditional vertical pressing.
Maturation: An eight-month sojourn on fine lees: 20% in epoxy cement tanks and 80% in 228-litre oak barrels. Bottling remains unfiltered but lightly sulphured for preservation.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Drinking Window: Best enjoyed from 2023 to 2033.
Ideal with goat cheese tartlets, grilled vegetable skewers, and olive tapenade.
Elevates simple snacks like prosciutto-wrapped melon or toasted bruschetta.
A definitive companion for French charcuterie, especially saucisson sec, paté, and cornichons.

PRESS HIGHLIGHTS:
Inside Burgundy (Jasper Morris MW on 2021 vintage):

"Half on alluvial soil and half on sand, the former adding spice and weight. Half raised in foudre and half in tank. Glowing purple and much fresher than Wild Soul. This is really classy with the lovely grip that Julien gets to reinforce his wines." - 91 PTS

Originally from Dijon with no vineyards to his name, Julien has catapulted to wine stardom in a manner that take many others an entire lifetime. After cutting his teeth with the famous Christophe Roumier of Burgundy and Jasper Morris MW at his importing business, he settled out... Read More >>
