96/100 - Here's a fascinating discovery from the quiet underground cellars of Roagna. The 2006 Barolo Riserva Pira is deeply saturated and sophisticated, with a dark garnet, almost crimson appearance that remains luminous and bright throughout. In terms of structure, the tannins have been softened and tapered down, thanks to bottle aging. The wine is literally weightless on the palate today. In a similar manner, the bouquet has become a seamless expression of evolved Nebbiolo, with a slew of licorice, ashy and dried berry aromas. This is a delight, and the wine is ready to drink if that is your pleasure. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
97/100 - The 2006 Barolo Pira Riserva Black Label is a tiny selection of about 2,400 bottles that spent five years in cask and then a decade in cement. Dense, exotic and beautifully layered, the Riserva captures that sense of timelessness that is often a signature of the Roagna wines - a place in time in which wines are both aged and young at the same time. It's that co-existence in two different worlds that defines many of the best wines here. Spice, orange zest, chocolate, spice, star anise and sweet pipe tobacco lend nuance to a wine that is just entering its first plateau of maturity. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
100/100 - The black label ('etichetta nera') from Pira is a Barolo Riserva, and this 2006 is the latest release. Muscular and reductive at first, it is focused on mineral tones of savoury rhubarb, clay and pot-pourri allied to cinnamon, wild strawberry and blood orange flavours. The structure is firm, with silky tannins of the greatest refinement melded with crisp acidity and impressive concentration. A high-flying vintage and an outstanding Barolo chiselled to perfection. - Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter
The bouquet immediately captivates with liquorice, ash, and dried fruit aromas, complemented by floral notes, iron, tar, and a hint of mint.
On the palate, it is velvety and well-structured, with exquisitely refined tannins.
Pair with hearty meat sauces or any red meat of your choice.
Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira is arguably one of the finest wines one can discover. It is sourced from Pira, ahistoric vineyard located in Castiglione Falletto (within Barolo, Northern Italy). Facing southeast, the seven hectares of this estate were acquired by the Roagna in 1989. Since then, the family has expertly extracted the best from the marine-origin soils, rich in white rock, iron, sand, and both grey and blue marls. This blend, situated at the heart of the Barolo region, is ideal for producing robust, tannic wines, as the harvested grapes are well-suited for such a profile. The 25-year-old vines are capable of yielding small, concentrated clusters, yet with a potent tannic presence that allows the red wine to mature for an extended period in oak barrels.
Indeed, this is the case with Roagna Barolo DOCG Riserva La Pira, which undergoes over five years of aging in oak barrels. Prior to this stage, the lengthy macerations that are characteristic of this producer (ranging from 60 to 100 days), as well as the alcoholic fermentations initiated from pied de cuve, are essential.
Without a doubt, this wine stands as one of the most exceptional wines from all of Northern Italy.
