Trousseau Gris is something of a viticultural rarity these days. We think that it is a variety that needs to be rediscovered, and what better way than by trying a bottle? This is a veritable high-wire act; light on its feet, wildly floral yet savoury with visceral depth. An inebriating blend of summer melon, stone fruit, white tea, and wet rock weave with finessed length and elegant palate presence.
17.5/20 - Pale orange-gold. Smells of unripe peaches, orange peel, and white flowers. Brisk flavours of orange peel, unripe peach, apricot pits, and wet pavement have a lovely faint salinity to them. The grapes are harvested from forty-year-old vines at the Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard, an organically and dry farmed vineyard in the Russian River valley. Grown on low-PH, poor sandy-loam Goldridge soil, these vines are among the small and rare plantings of this unique grape variety in California (and the world).
Jolie Laide keeps it traditional and press the grapes by foot, leaving the skins to macerate with the must for 2-3 days before racking. Fermented with native yeasts, the wine is aged on its fine lees for several months in neutral French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal SO2.
