Meeresboden, meaning 'ocean soil,' is yet another incredible white wine made by Graham Tatomer, America's leading producer of Germanic varieties. Sourced from a number of different vineyard sites planted atop sand, diatomaceous earth, and loam just a few kilometers from the Pacific, this is a bright and racy Grüner that only improves with age. Well-balanced and bursting with notes of stone fruit, yellow citrus, and saline minerality, Meeresboden is a deliciously expressive and complex, dry white.
93/100 - The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Meeresboden, German for "ocean soil," has become a signature wine in the Tatomer lineup. Sourced from John Sebastiano and Kick-on Ranch, it was aged in predominantly stainless steel with additions of acacia foudre without malolactic fermentation. A stony, bright, clean nose of green fruits, citrus peels, wet slate and petrichor transitions to a pleasantly supple, suave palate. On the palate, lively and refined, with a throughline of minerality wonderfully balancing the electric acidity. Flavours of lemon confit, white pepper, mint, sage, elderflower, and Asian pear burst from the glass. Vibrant and wonderfully expressive.
