Occasionally, we get lucky enough to get our hands on some old stock from our California producers. Such was the case with this wine, a 2014 Syrah from one of our very favourite winemakers in California, Sashi Moorman of Sandhi, Piedrasassi, and Domaine de la Côte. The Rim Rock vineyard is found in the Arroyo Grande Valley AVA, a cool-climate region in San Luis Obispo County where Rhône varietals thrive in higher elevations above the fog line. Located just 12km from the Pacific Ocean, this site produces complex, beguiling Syrah that sings with notes of dark florals and sour cherry fruit. The 2014 is in the midst of its prime drinking window, offering evolved flavours without any need for excess cellaring.
On the palate, full-bodied offering concentrated, powerful fruit flavours of pomegranate and red currant, with subtle nuances of cracked black pepper, smoked game, blood orange, and exotic spice. Beautifully structured with powdery tannins and sparks of juicy acidity, the long finish is highlighted by a distinct floral touch.
