Petitou means ‘little one’ - an apt name for Mas d’Amile’s introductory red, whose label was designed by Amélie’s children when aged six and four. A blend of Grenache Noir (60%), Syrah and Carignan from old, biodynamically farmed plots around the windswept village of Montpeyroux, the is matured in concrete vats to preserve its purity of fruit.
There is a lovely lift to this cuvée, which combines a sunny, Mediterranean profile of ripe dark fruit, garrigue and olive tapenade notes, with refreshing acidity and moderate alcohol. There is a charming rusticity to this wine which adds character and personality. Best decanted for half an hour, this pairs well with hearty meat dishes and mature, hard cheeses.
The east-facing Syrah plot is planted on very stony, limestone-rich soil. The Grenache plot - facing south - is situated at an altitude of 300 metres on one of the first foothills of the Larzac, just above the village. The soil there is also very stony and limestone-rich. The Carignan plot faces south-west and is planted on richer, clay-limestone soil.
Each grape variety is vinified separately, then blended and matured in concrete vats for 9 months before being bottled unfined, unfiltered and with minimal SO2 additions.
