Few winemakers in Napa can approximate the intimate connection to the land which John Kongsgaard and son, Alex, possess. Fifth and sixth generation Napans respectively, their winery - founded by John in the 1990s - has become arguably America's greatest producer of Chardonnay. Organically and sustainably farmed, their minimal touch in the cellar accentuates the innate beauty of their fruit, yielding powerful, elegant wines that showcase the unique characteristics of their grapes and the Napa terroir.
Kongsgaard’s flagship wine, The Judge Chardonnay, is made exclusively from fruit grown in the original 6-acre vineyard, with some vines dating back to the 1970s. This gnarly old vineyard miraculously produces, year after year, a truly unique wine of real “grand cru” stature.

In 2023, the Judge is not quite as opulent as it can be, with the personality of the cool, late-ripening season very much on display. Clean mineral notes cut through a core of candied citrus fruit and floral tones. Alex Kongsgaard and Evan Frazier, both winemakers, joined the partnership a decade later. Their production is limited to what Alex, Evan and John can make with their own hands.
Their organically farmed, shy-bearing vineyards and their archaic, low-intervention winemaking produce powerful, graceful wines – vivid expressions of vineyard and variety.
