France > Southern Rhône > Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This single-vineyard Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made with fruit grown on the pebbly soil of Les Galimards lieu dit, to the south of the appellation. Always part of the Giraud family's impressive holdings, this vineyard hosts some exceptionally old vines. This cuvée is a blend of 100-years-old Grenache (90%) and Syrah (10%) grapes picked in two tranches to allow perfect ripeness. The same natural fermentation and gentle extraction used for the cuvée Tradition brings here even more concentration, while retaining the domaine's signature elegance. Layered, full-bodied and long, this has all we love in fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

97/100 - A blend of 90% Grenache from century-old vines, aged in concrete, with 10% Syrah, aged in used barriques, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes is a black-fruited beauty, with notes of blackberries, black cherries, black licorice and black olives. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a lingering, spice-inflected finish, this is terrific stuff. - Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate

96/100 - Deep, shimmering ruby. Pungent, spice-accented red and dark berry liqueur, licorice, garrigue and potpourri scents show fine detail and minerally lift. Lush and expansive on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry, cherry and boysenberry flavors that become more lively as the wine opens up. Subtly chewy tannins add shape to the strikingly long, sappy finish, which echoes the floral and spice notes. - Josh Raynolds, Vinous

The Grenache is aged for 18 months in cement vats. Ageing in used Bordeaux barriques is reserved for the Syrah to promote micro-oxygenation and give structure. Bottled unfined and unfiletered with minimal SO2.

Powerful yet elegant on the nose with kirsh, strawberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit. Concentrated on the palate, it’s full-bodied yet incredibly smooth with flavours of cherry compote, raspberry tinged with liquorice, white pepper and wild herbs. Very long finish.

Despite being a relative newcomer, Domaine Giraud makes some of the most charming and elegant wines in the Rhône Valley’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Stylistically, the wines here strike a truly harmonious balance between wonderful southernly richness, but also, a remarkable delicacy and silkiness. Dense and supple fruit flows easily across the...
