Unique in the world of fine wine, Lebanon-based Château Musar seems to consistently eschew the vagaries of vintage variation, fashions promoted by critics and inexplicable price ‘repositioning’. Probably for these reasons, and many others, it remains a firm favourite with our customers, inspiring a fiercely loyal following.
Musar's red is the better known wine, but their white is equally distinctive and long-lived. A blend of ancient Lebanese grape varieties (Obaideh and Merwah), it undergoes a complex ageing process before release at 7 years of age that makes it truly unique.
There is much to enjoy here for lovers of Viña Gravonia and Tondonia alike. The relatively fresh 2017 vintage shows in the wine’s more saline character and less obvious oxidative notes compared to its 2018 rendition, while still displaying complex aromatics, depth and texture despite the low alcohol level. Another superb expression of this cult cuvée.
On the palate, citrus and subtle herbaceous notes, prominently featuring grapefruit and preserved lemons with an overall impression of ripeness, a lovely freshness and long, dry finish.
60% Obaideh (adds oiliness and body) and 40% Merwah (adds acidity and a pronounced lemony scent), most of which from ungrafted vines, planted in 1980, 1960 and 1920.
Fermented with native yeasts and aged in untoasted French oak (100% new) for 9 months, before a few months in stainless steel tanks and subsequent bottling. The wine is then matured in bottle in the old underground cellars for nearly 6 years before being released alongside Musar red.
