Run by brother and sister Alberto and Caterina Burzi, Burzi is a small, artisanal estate in La Morra crafting elegant wines with great purity of fruit and a strong sense of place. Its holdings include some of La Morra’s finest sites, such as La Serra and Capalot, with vines up to 80 years old.

The Barolo 2021 is a wonderful introduction to Burzi’s stunning range of Barolos. Expressive and powerful, it shows a classic La Morra profile of generous, ripe fruit and fine-grained tannins, with satisfying medicinal undertones adding complexity. Undoubtedly age-worthy, it already offers plenty of pleasure.

Their Barolo is made from a selection 30-70-year-old vines across the estate’s La Morra vineyards, in the following crus (MGAs): Rive (250m), Roncaglie (300m) and Rocchettevino (400-450m). The vines grow on calcareous marl soils, on East- to South-East facing slopes. Native yeast fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with around 25-30 days of skin contact, the wine is then aged in big 60hl Austrian oak casks to soften its powerful tannins, before spending a further few months in concrete vats.

Classic and expressive on the nose, it offers ripe dark cherry, tobacco, leather and tar, with hints of burnt orange zest and spice. Medium to full bodied, the palate is structured by ripe tannins that are firm without being aggressive, while its mouth-watering acidity is beautifully integrated. Dark fruit and savoury, medicinal notes linger on the long finish. Undoubtedly age-worthy, yet already offering plenty of pleasure already.

We recommend decanting it for an hour before serving.
