Run by brother and sister Alberto and Caterina Burzi, Burzi is a small, artisanal estate in La Morra crafting elegant wines with great purity of fruit and a strong sense of place. Its holdings include some of La Morra’s finest sites, such as La Serra and Capalot, with vines up to 80 years old.

The Barolo Capalot Vecchie Viti 2021 is one of Burzi’s two single-vineyard Barolos, and their most powerful. It marries La Morra’s fruit-forward character with the structure and concentration of old-vine fruit. Stunning.

Their top bottling hails from an 80-year-old plot in Santa Maria di La Morra's most famous cru. The vineyard is located on a south-facing slope at 300m of elevation, and is planted with a mix of Lampia (55%) and Michet (30%) clones, as well as approximately 15% Nebbiolo Rosé. Native yeast fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with 35-45 days of skin contact using the submerged cap technique, it is then aged in neutral 30hl Austrian oak casks before spending a further few months in concrete vats.

Powerful on the nose, it offers well-defined, ripe dark fruit and balsamic notes, alongside tar, tobacco, dried rose petals and baking spice. Medium to full bodied, the palate is structured by ripe tannins that are firm yet extremely fine grained, while mouth-watering acidity brings lovely freshness. The interplay between the wine’s dry austerity and haunting aromatics is totally captivating.

We recommend decanting it for an hour before serving.
