WINERY HISTORY
Silver Oak Cellars was established in 1972 on a handshake between friends Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer, and is now one of the most iconic names in Napa and Alexander Valleys. Though based in Oakville, it was the Alexander Valley Cabernet — first released in 1977 — that started it all. Made by Justin Meyer, it played a seminal role in establishing Alexander Valley as a serious source of world-class Cabernet. The wine was crafted to be a new style of Cabernet Sauvignon: rich and complex, yet enjoyable upon release. In 1979 the first release of their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was another milestone in the history of Silver Oak, bringing Napa's greater depth and structure to their range while retaining the estate’s hallmark polished style.
In 1994, Justin Meyer chose Daniel Baron to succeed him as winemaker. Daniel, with an impressive winemaking pedigree which included Château Petrus and Dominus, was vastly instrumental in developing the style of Silver Oak. In 2025, Laura Oskwarek was appointed new head winemaker, after apprenticing for years under Nate Weis.
Since Justin Meyer’s retirement in 2001, the Duncan family has continued to elevate the estate. Under the stewardship of Ray Duncan's sons Tim and David R. Duncan, Silver Oak has deepened its commitment to sustainability and precision viticulture - reducing their environmental impact while raising fruit quality to ever higher levels. The two brothers have expanded their vineyard holdings over the years, acquiring prime vineyard sites in both Napa Valley and Alexander Valley.
In 2019 they became one of the first wineries in the world to join the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) - a collaborative working group of environmentally committed wineries taking a science-based approach to reducing carbon emissions across the wine industry. Today, both their Napa and Alexander Valley wineries are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum Certified - the world’s first production wineries to achieve this globally recognized symbol of sustainable achievement.
VITICULTURE & WINEMAKING
Since 1999, Soda Canyon Ranch has formed the backbone of Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Located in the south-eastern part of Napa Valley, on the western edge of the Atlas Peak AVA, its volcanic, rocky soils produce low yields of intensely concentrated berries. Jump Rock Vineyard complements the blend. Situated at 450 metres of altitude within the Atlas Peak AVA, its rugged terrain is marked by striking red, rocky outcrops. Fruit from this site brings lifted aromatics of blackberry and cassis, alongside added richness and structure to the wine.
The Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is drawn from five Alexander Valley estate vineyards situated at the southern end of the valley, along the benchlands that rise above the Russian River. A combination of alluvial, clay and sandy loam soils, with excellent water-holding capacity, is key to the wine’s balance of concentrated fruit and refreshing acidity. The rich cassis and berry flavour of the Miraval Vineyard are balanced by the bright, black cherry aromas and firm acidity lent by the Red Tail Vineyard. The serpentine soils of the Geyserville vineyard yield a black-pepper spiciness that adds zest to the final blend.
Silver Oak was one of the first Californian wineries to age their wines entirely in American oak. Justin Meyer considered that American oak contributed fewer harsh tannins than French oak, and possessed a fresh, spicy character that complemented the fruit-forward style of his wines. The use of American oak remains such a hallmark of these distinctive and distinguished wines that Silver Oak own their own cooperage in Missouri - the only winery in California to do so.
