Sottimano is one of our favourite estates in Piedmont and in the exceptional 2021 vintage, they’ve reached brilliant new heights.

From the beginning, the vineyards have been farmed organically and with great attention paid to their place in the wider environment. In the winery too, production is refreshingly free of embellishment with natural yeasts and long macerations used to coax the very best from each site.

The style has evolved under the current generation. As Galloni notes, "since the early 2000s, Andrea Sottimano has completely transformed the estate, moving away from the modernist approach he favoured back then to wines that embody a contemporary expression of classicism that is hugely appealing." What hasn’t changed is their commitment to quality.

For Sottimano, 2021 represents “a new kind of classic vintage” writes Monica Larner in the Wine Advocate. Winter was cold with snow and deep freezes before a long cool growing season. “[...] the 2021 Barbarescos may turn out to be even better [than 2020], as they benefit from a cooler growing season with longer hang time” agrees Antonio Galloni.
