This utterly unique California Cabernet Sauvignon - sourced from old vine plantings propagated from 19th century Chateau Margaux cuttings - is very expressive on the nose with scents of brown spice, plum, cherry, and of course, black currant. Relatively restrained tannins on the palate with flavors of currant, sage, and mint. This wine is powerful yet with beautiful restraint.
98/100 - A “wow” wine with a few years of bottle aging already into it, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. A cool harvest season kept things slow, steady, and unrushed, which shows in the gracefulness of the wine, beautiful in high-acidity and freshness, dusty tannins, and enduring structure. The redcurrant fruit is seasoned in graphite, dried herb, and black peppercorn, complex and intriguing throughout, with a medium-bodied weight that feels light and finessed. In 2018, although technically a drought year, the harvest started in late September and ran until mid-October. Cool temperatures prevailed, allowing for a relaxed pace. All fermentations were natural, with no additions. After two years in barrel, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
