Dupuis is the latest project of acclaimed winemaker Wells Guthrie, the force behind the prodigious rise of Copain. Having sold up his stake and moved to the peaceful and isolated Anderson Valley, Wells has sought to strip his winemaking down to its bare bones, focusing on sourcing high-quality fruit which effortlessly expresses terroir and varietal expression.
His Baker Ranch Syrah, is a Northern Rhone-inspired Syrah, from one of the most well-known vineyards in the southern part of Anderson Valley. Fermented with whole clusters, it's all about aromatic richness with blackberry fruit, enticing floral, peppery and savoury notes. On the palate, Baker Ranch's unique terroir combines energy and concentration, with silky tannins and layers of flavours unfolding to the long finish. A must-try for Syrah lovers!
Located on a mid-elevation east-facing slope on the south side of the valley, vines in the Baker Ranch vineyard are planted on very shallow slate-based Casabonne-Wohly soils with a notably high mineral content and unusually high pH for California, which helps give the wines a distinctive, savoury edge.
The wine was fermented with native yeasts and whole clusters, and aged in neutral French oak to preserve purity of fruit.
