Mayacamas Vineyards is amongst the most renowned and iconic estates in the Napa Valley. Established atop Mount Veeder in 1889, the estate has remained remarkably true to its roots, with very few changes made to viticultural or winemaking styles since the 1950's. Their Chardonnay is a true classic, delighting with the vibrant intensity of California and natural restraint of mountainside fruit.
95/100 - The 2016 Chardonnay is simply dazzling. Bright, fresh and nuanced, the 2016 possesses striking energy from the very first taste. Lemon peel, almond, mint and white flowers are some of the many aromas and flavors that emerge from this finely sketched, vibrant Chardonnay. A wine of pure and total class, the 2016 has the pedigree to age gracefully for many years to come. Quite simply, this is an unbelievably beautiful wine that is sure to delight Mayacamas fans. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
17/20 - Pale lemon yellow. Almost Chablis-like nose – very racy and refreshing indeed with the lightest of lees influence. Masses of acidity and a juicy, bone dry finish. This is lightyears from the old popcorn-rich California Chardonnay stereotype. Very clean, fresh and appetising with the lightest undertow that reminds us it was aged in oak rather than stainless steel. Very competent. One to confound a few European blind tasters, I would have thought. - Jancis Robinson MW
93/100 - Bright but forward aromas of pie crust, French toast and ripe lemon peel give way to a chiselled, clean palate of green apple and wet slate. Unwinds and integrates after time in the glass, straddling a punchy, rich, classic California Chardonnay texture with a breezy, saline lift. As is standard practice, malolactic fermentation was blocked, and the wine was aged in a mixture of barrique, puncheon and stainless steel. - Matthew Luczy, Decanter
On the palate, the wine expands, broadening the frame and adding layers of texture and energy. Secondary flavours of cardamom and bergamot round out the mid-palate. The finish is long with lingering nots of orchard fruit, flint rock, and salinity.
While incredible in its youth, this Chardonnay is more than capable of ageing for at least two decades.
Enjoy as an aperitif, or pair alongside a cheese and onion quiche.
