Run by brother and sister Alberto and Caterina Burzi, Burzi is a small, artisanal estate in La Morra crafting elegant wines with great purity of fruit and a strong sense of place. Its holdings include some of La Morra’s finest sites, such as La Serra and Capalot, with vines up to 80 years old.

The Barolo La Serra 2021 is one of Burzi’s two single-vineyard Barolos, from their highest-altitude vineyard. Combined with a cooler, east-facing aspect, this vineyard lends a Barolo of great finesse and elegance. Gorgeous.

The La Serra bottling hails from a plot planted in the La Serra cru in 2013. High elevation (450m) and east exposure result in a Barolo which is especially fragrant and lifted, with energising, mouth-watering acidity. The vineyard is planted with a mix of Lampia (75%) and Michet (20%) clones, as well as approximately 5% Nebbiolo Rosé. Native yeast fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with 35-45 days of skin contact using the submerged cap technique, it is then aged in neutral 20hl Austrian oak casks before spending a further few months in concrete vats.

Fragrant on the nose, it offers high-toned aromas of rose petal and ripe red fruit, alongside delicate notes of tobacco, orange zest and baking spice. Medium to full bodied, the palate is structured by firm yet fine-grained tannins, with plenty of refreshing acidity. Charming and almost ethereal, it can already be enjoyed in its youthful phase after decanting, although it will continue to develop graceful complexity over the years.

We recommend decanting it for an hour before serving.
